Traces of Old Norse in the English Language

It’s not only in places names in for instance France and England, or in the days of the week names (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Freday) – that Old Norse has left its mark. Also in common everyday words there are traces.

In connection with launch of “The Last Kingdom”, BBC America has compiled a list of 10 such words. Some are relatively known if you speak a modern Scandinavian language or have spent even a little time studying the Viking Age, however there are some surprising words too – like “happy” and “window”.
