Video – The Viking Longship Secrets

Using footage from the History Channel’s “Vikings” TV series, here is a link to a short video from History.com that seeks to provide an introduction to the characteristics and advantages of the Viking longship.

Interestingly the first episode of the first season was criticized by some historians for portraying the longship as a sudden breakthrough in Viking seafaring ability – where it is generally assumed to have been a more gradual and evolutionary process (which makes sense, and is supported from archaeological finds). The TV show defended the portrayal as “artistic license” (which is also fair).

However it is worth keeping in mind, that it is still unknown when the key shape and structure of the longships and the vital addition of sails occurred – this remains one of the greater mysteries relating to the Viking Age.
